I'm a photographer in Nova Scotia

Weather wise, you KNOW what that means: rain/cancellations, cold fronts/red noses, icy roads/re-scheduling, wind/messy hair, squirrels/hyper excited dogs...

...which is why...

I LOVE studio photography!

Call me someone who likes to be in control, that's OK with me. I love knowing that when I'm doing a photo session in my little home studio, which was once your standard rec room, I get to call the shots when it comes to temperature, environment and, most importantly, LIGHT!

Here's why I love my own little home studio! (We all love a good checklist, right?)

  1. No matter what's happening weatherwise outdoors, we can be comfortable and happy inside. No need for puffy coats and a years supply of tissue to get us through the session!
  2. It's so comfortable. We can sit and chat before we start. We can take breaks. The dogs can be taken for a walk in the yard if they need a reset and then come back in. You have time to sit and relax and take a breath and just get your bearings.
  3. Kids and pets can relax and do their thing, too. I just shut the door and there we are, all safe and sound!
  4. It's private! Doing the photography in my home studio is so much nicer for people who may be a bit shy about working in locations where there are other people around. It's great for kids who need less stimuli and for dogs that are less anxious when indoors.
  5. There's no need to scout the surroundings for a good natural background for the photo session, as I can purchase or make backdrops to suit us. They're pretty easy to switch up, so using more than one during a session is very doable.
  6. The time of day does not matter. Not at all. With one to three lights and lots of practice, I can create the looks to compliment everything from a moody dark background to one that is bright white.
  7. Doing in studio sessions allows me to use props for some of the sessions. I LOVE props and you'll often find me at thrift stores looking for some great new finds. One of my favourites was saved from my best friend's dumpster as they were preparing to move: a 1960s red wagon made of wood.
  8. It's cat friendly! That's our Scarlet in the title photo. She often comes down and "helps" as I'm setting up.
  9. I can indulge in the styled sessions that I love to do, especially with kids, that focus on a theme. The Vintage Tea Party, The Workshop and The Yellow Chair are all great examples of that type of session.
  10. This one I saved until last as it is very, very important: There's a washroom just down the hall. Very important.

Bonus: The studio area is easily accessible as it's on the ground floor. We can enter through the garage and avoid all steps. It has been wheelchair accessible, and I'm more than happy to take entryway measurements for you to compare to your own environment.

Would you like to try a studio session?

What else can I tell you? They're not scary or stuffy or weird. (Disclaimer: I do make some pretty weird noises to get the attention of any dogs you may have with you. Otherwise, not weird.) My little home studio is just a nice place to make some photos that I certainly hope you will love. Want to come in for a session?
